OUR TEAM

Having fun!

All employees are provided with ongoing training so that they can competently perform all necessary maintenance tasks. Employees take a mandatory plant ID and pruning seminar that is given by an experienced member of our team. Continuing education is strongly encouraged, and incentives are provided for successful completion of all horticultural related courses. Meridian subsidizes the expense of taking such courses. Meridian's staff turnover is low, and the majority of our general staff have been with the company for several years.

Landscape Industry Certified

Meridian has a number of experienced supervisors, all of whom have considerable knowledge of horticulture, landscape maintenance and Meridian's high standards. Our supervisors are all extremely professional and approachable and continuously work with clients to provide the quality service that they are looking for. All supervisors are encouraged and supported by the company to complete the Landscape Industry Certified Technician program.

Tim Fry

Tim Fry
Operations Manager

Tim has worked at Meridian Landscaping since the existence of time itself. He came to the company as a fresh faced 23-year-old with a diploma in Integrated Pest Management, and a four- year stint in the Plant Breeding Department with Agriculture Canada. Over his tenure, Meridian has grown from a small company of 10 crew members, to its current peak form of nearly 50 employees. During his employment, Tim has completed the Residential Landscape Technician program at Douglas College, obtained his Certified Horticulture Technician certification, and will this spring be challenging the Red Seal Certification exam in Landscape Horticulture. He was used as a consultant to help write the curriculum for the exam so he should hopefully have no problem passing. As the Operations Manager, Tim oversees all maintenance crews and procedures, and additionally is the resident Excel Spreadsheet number cruncher of the company. In his spare time he enjoys the company of his 8 year old daughter, and keeps young by playing guitar in multiple punk rock bands.

Troy Mulberry

Troy Mulberry
Landscape Services

Troy has been with Meridian Landscaping for over 10 years, during which time he completed his Undergraduate Degree from the University of British Columbia (in history – useless) and the Integrated Pest Management Certificate from the Ministry of Environment (slightly more useful). He “helps” oversee both the maintenance and renovation departments and has a strong on-site presence looking after our crews. Outside of Meridian, Troy plays golf because he’s secretly 80 years old. He’s also a trivia king, because nothing is better than useless knowledge (see above degree). Further, Troy thinks he’s super funny, and we at Meridian are kind enough to let him believe that.

Louise

Louise Porter
Landscape Services Manager

Louise has worked at Meridian Landscaping for over a decade. She came to Meridian with several years’ experience gardening at high-end residential homes in the British Properties. As the Landscape Services Manager, she works with clients on landscape improvements, renovations, garden design, and co-ordinates and designs all our client’s summer and fall annual displays.

In her spare time Louise can be found gracing the stage as a leading lady at the First Impressions Theatre in Deep Cove, or hiking Vancouver’s many mountains with her faithful Co-Pilot, Tyson.

Maddie and Emily

Maddie and Emily
Administration

Maddie and Emily manage all the administrative needs of Meridian Landscaping, as well as oversee the Irrigation Division. Emily and Maddie have a lot of things in common: hyper- organized, tech savvy, being picky eaters and incredibly sassy. They’re so similar that creating a writeup for each of them would’ve been pointless. Everyone in the office mixes them up anyway. They both have advanced certification in Quickbooks, oversee the accounts receivable and payable, and are the friendly voices you’ll hear over the phone. They bonded over their love of bad reality television, a true affinity for candy and a deep seeded enjoyment of torturing Troy. You’ll find them in their office, which is always kept at a blistering 100 degrees, with Maddie’s chihuahua, Toast (commonly mistaken as an escaped guinea pig).

Gordie

Gordie
Office Mascot

The newest addition to Meridian Landscaping is certainly our most popular. He’s energetic, fun and definitely the friendliest member of the management team. He’s taken very well to his new role where he thoroughly enjoys fertilizing lawns and cleaning up sticks.

Sarah Janzen

Sarah Janzen
Founder and Principal

Sarah Janzen started Meridian Landscaping Ltd. in 1994 (for context: Troy was 3, Maddie was 1, and Emily wasn’t born yet). She acquired Parklawn Sprinklers (now the Irrigation Division) in 2014, further expanding her landscaping empire. She has an MBA from Royal Roads University and is a treasure trove of landscaping related knowledge. She is always happy to answer any and all client questions and keeps an open-door policy for employees. Outside of Meridian, Sarah works out everyday, but surprisingly she hasn’t done any physical labour since she realized she could hire someone to do it for her. She is also the proud mother of two young, energetic boys, whom she loves unconditional, and who are the reason she’s always first in on Monday morning. Sarah likes to distinguish herself from her employees by having the only black truck in the fleet (which she swaps out more often than she cuts her hair – which is a lot).

Lastly, we are contractually obligated to say she is the best boss imaginable (we’ll be fired otherwise).

She can be reached via email at

I would like to express my appreciation to Sarah Janzen and her team at Meridain Landscaping for their consistently professional quality of work at our building "The Chatham" in Hampton Place at UBC
